OSDU NewsDe La Salle World Affairs Extemp and Cross-Ex Tournament09/29/2009
Monday, September, 28, 2009 Dear Debate Coaches and Debaters, It is our pleasure to invite you to De La Salle College’s first World Affairs Debate and Public Speaking Contest on Friday, October 23, 2009. We hope that this invitational tournament will become a successful and enjoyable annual event. The tournament encourages students to develop an appreciation for world issues and current events while furthering their speaking and debating skills. Students will take part in two rounds of extemporaneous impromptu speaking and a final round of cross-examination debate. All three rounds require general knowledge of current affairs. Topics will be drawn from a broad range including international stories, national news, sports and entertainment. Performance in both public speaking and debate will be judged based on research, background knowledge, wit and opinion. The tournament will be open to students in grades 9 to 12. Each school is invited to send two 2-person teams and to register as soon as possible as we do have limited space at the College. Each team is required to bring an adult judge. The tournament will consist of two rounds of extemporaneous speaking and a third round of cross-ex debate based on an impromptu resolution. We ask that students dress in business professional attire. The registration fee is $55 per school due by Friday October 16, 2009. Schools can register two teams with an option to bring additional swing team members. Cheques should be made out to “De La Salle College.” A light dinner will be provided. We are genuinely excited to be hosting this event and hope you will all join us on October 23rd. Please return the attached registration form by mail, fax or e-mail. If you have any questions, please contact me by telephone at (416) 969-8771 Ext. 304, Fax at (416) 969-9175, or by e-mail at sbellisario@delasalleoaklands.org.
