OSDU NewsThornhill Debating Tournament Invitation09/27/2009 September 27th, 2009 Dear Debaters, Coaches and Judges, The Thornhill Secondary School Debating Union is pleased to invite you to our annual debate tournament, to be held at This tournament is designed to provide debaters of all experience levels with a chance to compete at a local level in preparation for university-level competition. Format: Each team will be able to compete in five guaranteed rounds of debate (two on Friday and three on Saturday), with additional semi-final and final rounds on Saturday. The fifth round of overall debate (third round on Saturday) will be the hidden quarter-finals. All rounds will be debated in Canadian Parliamentary Style. A prepared resolution will be debated on Friday evening, with each team having the opportunity to be both Government and Opposition in successive rounds. The remaining three rounds, the semi-finals and finals, will be in the form of squirrelable debates with an option for an impromptu resolution. Teams will receive their topic and position (Government or Opposition) prior to the round in order to prepare their arguments. It is highly encouraged that teams bring their own cases for squirrelable rounds. Friday will also include a short workshop for debaters on argument construction and the roles of each speaker in the debate. Prepared Resolution: BIRT THW CONDONE A NORTH KOREAN NUCLEAR WEAPONS PROGRAM Food: Dinner will be served on Friday night. Breakfast and lunch on Saturday will also be provided. Beverages will also be available throughout the tournament. Any dietary restrictions should be noted on the registration form. Registration: The registration fee is $90 per team ($45 per debater). This includes five guaranteed rounds of debate, as well as three meals and beverages. Registration information must be emailed to the tournament directors no later than Friday, October 9th, 2009. Alternatively, cheques may also be given to the tournament directors at registration on the first day of the tournament. There is a limit of four teams per school. However, if your school wishes to bring more teams, please contact the tournament directors and your request will be taken into consideration. Each school must bring at least one judge for every two teams. Judges can be teachers, debate coaches or experienced/graduated debaters. This is to ensure panel judging in as many rounds as possible. The tournament will be capped, so please send in your registration information as soon as possible to reserve your spot in the tournament.
