Invitation to Metro North, East, and West Regionals

Dear Metro Toronto Debating Coaches and Students,

Members of the Ontario Student Debating Union located in Metro North, Metro East, and Metro West are cordially invited to compete in the Regional Qualifiers on Saturday February 20, 2010 at Richmond Hill High School. Please see the attached itinerary for more information about the day’s schedule.

This tournament will qualify the top teams to participate in the OSDU Provincial Championship, which will take place in Ottawa from March 26-28, 2010.  The top teams at the Provincial Championship will qualify to represent Ontario at the National Championship in Victoria in April.

Both the Regional Qualifier and the Provincial Championships are now exclusively team events.  Students may only qualify for the next level of competition in teams. If a team qualifies for Provincials based on the Regional tournament, they can't make any changes to the team they send to Provincials. In addition, no school hybrid teams are allowed at Regionals or Provincials.  The OSDU executive has allocated the following number of team spots per region to the Provincial Championships based on the number of schools registered:

                   Metro East: 4               Metro North: 5            Metro West: 4

Please Note: Although there will be three regions represented at this event (Metro East, Metro North and Metro West), teams will only face other teams from their region.

Format

For all rounds, students will debate in the Canadian National Debate Format (see attached description). For the first two rounds, each team will debate both sides of the prepared resolution that is given on the next page.  The third and fourth rounds will be impromptu debating, and will also follow the Canadian National Debate format. Please note that no squirreling will be permitted for the third and fourth rounds.

Registration

Schools are invited to register up to two teams.  An experienced judge is required for each team. The fee is $60 per team of two debaters and an adult judge, payable at the door on the day of the tournament. Cheques should be made payable to Richmond Hill High School. Please send completed registration forms via e-mail (katrine.doganoglu@yrdsb.edu.on.ca) or fax (905-884-9653) to Katrine Doganoglu at Richmond Hill High School. The deadline for submitting your registration is Friday January 29, 2010.  

Please Note: Schools may also place an additional team on the waiting list. Teams from the waiting list may be added after Friday January 29 if there is space remaining.
